Many opportunities are available for our SPPS students in the area of
Indian Education. The Center for Professional Development and the
Indian Education Office have collaborated over the years to develop
high quality curriculum and provide the best available materials for
schools:
Distribution of Materials
• “Painting the Dakota” and “Wauncipi- We are
Dancing” videos distributed to the 14 elementary schools that received
the Painting the Dakota book in May of 2002. This curriculum is
specifically targeted to the 5th grade curriculum and teachers for
inclusion.
• “Ojibwe Work” (produced by the Minnesota Historical
Society and the National Film Preservation Foundation) and the “Winter
Count” videos distributed to 12 elementary schools based on American
Indian student numbers for 2002/2003. This curriculum is primarily
written for teachers of American Indian students in grades 5-8.
• “American Indian History, Culture and Language:
Curriculum Framework, (CFL developed) distributed to all schools and to
other interested parties.
• The Good Path by Thomas Peacock was distributed to
15 elementary schools based on the number of American Indian students
for 2003/2004.
• Sacred Legacy by Edward S. Curtis was distributed to 600 students in 55 schools 2003/04.

Curriculum Team Teaching Saint Paul History Spring 2002—booklet and CD
which includes Seth Eastman photos. Also, Rivertown: A History of St.
Paul, Minnesota distributed by the curriculum team with an audio CD
produced in 2002.
• Grade 4 “Minnesota: Cultures, Economy, Geography,
and Institutions” content guide. Materials developed by the Curriculum
Team Minnesota Curriculum Resource Packet August 2000—booklet included
numerous maps and resource information.

2. Numerous references to the American Indian History, Culture and Language:
Curriculum Framework, Minnesota Department of Children, Families and
Learning, 1995 throughout the middle school and high school social
studies lesson plans.
3. Additional lesson plans for elementary World
Language course on Ojibwe Values/Seven Teachings K-3 and 4-6. (No
Category on website, but materials are available through Michelle

4. Indian Land Tenure curriculum and lesson plans are
available currently through Indian Education, Center for Professional
Development, and on-line by September at the SPPS curriculum web-site.
